Ramón Rodríguez, director of the Victims Unit, announced that in the coming days the national government will file the project announced by President Iván Duque, which seeks to extend the Victims Law for 10 years.
Rodriguez’s announcement became known after the First Committee of the House of Representatives approved, in the first debate, one of the initiatives with the same purpose.
“We attended the First Commission of the Chamber, where the bill was approved in the first debate, which raises the extension of the Victims Law,” said Rodriguez, after indicating that “it was a democratic exercise in which we were clarifying to all the congressmen what are the doubts and why the importance of project”.
He also explained that “beyond the extension of Law, it is to be able to make adjustments to that extension, so that it allows us to attend to all the victims in a responsible way and advance the reparation processes both individually and collective”.
During the session, the representative to the Chamber of Democratic Center, Gabriel Vallejo, said he supported the extension of the initiative, but insisted on reviewing the issue of the validity of land restitution.
The representative of Cundinamarca, Buenaventura León, also warned that not extending the Victims Law would be detrimental to the millions of victims waiting to be repaired”.
The representative to the Chamber, Juanita Goebertus, of the Green party, declared herself in favor of extending the Law, but requested to strengthen it in matters of coverage, resources, prioritization for reparation and the generation of resources for victims.
