“Yo lo perdí todo en los Llanos Orientales. Inicialmente llegué desplazada a Manizales en el año 2016, pero justo antes de esa salida de los Llanos me di cuenta de que la ahuyama se perdía. En esos días de desesperación por lo que me había sucedido, encontré unas a borde de carretera y Dios me iluminó para inventarme un producto. Al principio me salió como un flan de ahuyama y terminó siendo una especie de arepa, con bocadillo y queso”, comenta Alba.
Esta mujer lo perdió todo, porque el negocio de abarrotes que tenía en Vista Hermosa se lo quemaron por no pagarles la “vacuna” a los grupos armados. De todo lo que tenía solo le quedó una pequeña sartén de teflón. Tres días después, entró a la cocina aún envuelta en hollín y con una ahuyama en la mano, se inventó una torta sin esencia y sin polvo, el producto final fue una arepa artesanal. “Ahí dije, sin pensarlo, que eso no era para comer si no para vender y empecé el negocio, lo vendía a la base de policía en Puerto Concordia, ellos me conocían por lo que había pasado y me cogieron aprecio, también me apoyaron mercado y allí fue donde arrancó todo el tema de las arepas”, recuerda.
Por el temor de seguir viviendo en Puerto Concordia, porque quedaba muy cerca de Vista Hermosa, sitio donde tuvo lugar el peor día de su vida, y tratando de tener una mayor tranquilidad junto a sus cuatro hijos, Alba viajó rumbo a la ciudad de Manizales luego que su hermana le brindara posada, allí comenzó una nueva lucha, eso sí, con la esperanza firme de poder tener un mayor éxito con su producto.
“Nosotros llegamos como se dice popularmente con una mano atrás y la otra adelante, una colchoneta y llenos de ilusiones. Nos instalamos donde mi hermana y de inmediato me fui a la Alcaldía, me hice anotar como desplazada y a la jornada siguiente madrugué a venderles arepas, todos quedaron gratamente sorprendidos, yo siempre tengo una frase en mi mente, ‘la actitud va camino al éxito’, y salgo con alegría a vender así tenga problemas”.
Alba es toda una guerrera de la vida que ha pasado por diferentes dificultades. Habían pasado solo días después del incendio, cuando su hijo mayor tuvo un accidente en el Ejército, pagando el servicio militar. Estas dos situaciones la llevaron a una depresión profunda, especialmente por las condiciones de su hijo, pero encontró en la venta de las arepas, una salida y una ilusión.
“A Pereira llegué donde otra hermana, movida por una situación delicada con mi hijo que estuvo pagando servicio y tuvo un accidente con una carreta, le hicieron las atenciones iniciales, terminó de pagar servicio y luego me lo borraron del sistema, justo antes de hacer el proceso de cirugía”, cuenta Alba.
“Una vez, pasando por el centro de Pereira, vi las instalaciones de la Alcaldía, hablé con el vigilante, le dije que era desplazada que necesitaba ayuda y el vigilante me dijo que ingresara pero que no fuera a vender, le dije que listo y en el ascensor logré vender como 10 arepas”. Ese día, Alba aprovechó su paso por la Administración Municipal y buscó a la trabajadora social para mostrarle el producto. Ella le dio un beso y le dijo “esto es suyo y es grande, usted es una microempresaria y se le van a abrir las puertas que usted quiera que se le abran”, rememora Alba, con una sonrisa.
La funcionaria le dio una carta para que asistiera al SENA, en donde también la han apoyado mucho y, además de consumir sus ya famosas arepas, adelanta estudios en gastronomía, mercadeo, servicio al cliente y sistemas.
Haciendo un recorrido por su pasado, Alba recuerda que “la infancia que me tocó vivir fue muy dura, cuando solo tenía 9 años mi mamá murió y quedé con dos hermanitas pequeñas, mi papá nos crio y fue un gran padre hasta que también se nos fue a descansar estando muy joven. En adelante tuve una juventud loca y comencé como madre muy rápido, ahora tengo cuatro hijos, los dos primeros de un papá (Wilder 22 años y Miguel 21 años), otro que nació en Anserma, Caldas (Andrés 17 años) y el último un llanero de 6 añitos (Jhojan)”.
A pesar de todo lo sucedido, ella sigue con sus sueños intactos, sueña con que sus hijos salgan adelante, que se puedan graduar y lleguen a ser profesionales, quiere ayudarlos para salir adelante. Con las arepas, se ve con una microempresa brindándoles oportunidades a madres cabeza de hogar, gente que ha pasado por dificultades como ella y que no ha tenido la vida fácil. “Yo sé lo difícil que es conseguir un trabajo, yo por lo menos me defiendo con las arepas que elaboro, pero hay gente que en el día no consigue nada”, dice con tristeza.
Cuenta que “la Unidad para las Víctimas es un apoyo muy grande, porque uno llega y tiene la información pertinente, también me han apoyado con lo de las arepas, es bueno cuando uno llega a una parte y lo reciben como en la casa, de igual manera me están apoyando con los trámites para la libreta militar de uno de los hijos y eso es fundamental para el tema laboral”.
Para Alba, las dificultades también pueden ser puntos de partida de grandes cosas: “Ser desplazado no es ser pobre, haber perdido algo por los problemas de conflicto, por no pagar una vacuna o una extorsión es difícil, pero no es el fin del mundo, ser víctimas no es andar como un mendigo, hay gente que porque es desplazada salen en chanclas y sin bañarse, pero hay que tener amor propio y dignidad. Somos desplazados pero tenemos un corazón grande, otros dicen que como son desplazados no podemos hacer nada, pero somos gente y verracos, nos podemos dejarnos caer el mundo encima y tenemos que demostrar que podemos salir adelante, somos personas buenas”.
Alba ve su vida como una enseñanza hacia los demás y hacia sus propios hijos. Como ella, miles de mujeres desplazadas se levantan cada día con la esperanza de trabajar por un país más justo y equitativo, y en el que no se repitan más los hechos que la llevaron a ella y a su familia a salir de su tierra.

Screen reader and keyboard navigation
Our website implements the ARIA (Accessible Rich Internet Applications) attribute technique, along with several different behavior changes, to ensure that blind users who visit with screen readers can read, understand, and enjoy the features of the website. As soon as a user with a screen reader enters your site, they are immediately prompted to enter the screen reader profile so they can effectively navigate and operate your site. Here's how our website covers some of the most important screen reader requirements, along with console screenshots of code examples:
Screen Reader Optimization: We run a background process that learns website components from top to bottom, to ensure continued compliance even when the website is updated. In this process, we provide screen readers with meaningful data using the ARIA attribute set. For example, we provide accurate form tags; actionable icon descriptions (social media icons, search icons, cart icons, etc.); validation guide for form inputs; roles of elements such as buttons, menus, modal dialogs (popups), and others. In addition, the background process scans all images on the website and provides an accurate and meaningful description based on Image Object Recognition as an ALT (alternative text) tag for images that are not described. It will also extract texts that are embedded within the image, using an OCR (Optical Character Recognition) technology. To activate screen reader settings at any time, users just need to press the Alt+1 keyboard combination. Screen reader users also receive automated prompts to activate screen reader mode as soon as they enter the website.
These settings are compatible with all popular screen readers, including JAWS and NVDA.
Keyboard navigation optimization: The background process also adjusts the HTML of the website and adds various behaviors using JavaScript code to make the website work with the keyboard. This includes the ability to navigate the website using the Tab and Shift+Tab keys, operate dropdown menus with the arrow keys, close them with Esc, activate buttons and links using the Enter key, navigate between radio items and checkboxes using the arrow keys and complete them with the space bar or the Enter key. In addition, keyboard users will find quick navigation and content skip menus, available at any time by clicking Alt+1, or as the first site elements while navigating with the keyboard. The background process also handles triggered popups by moving keyboard focus to them as soon as they appear, and not allowing focus to drift away from it.
Users can also use shortcuts such as "M" (menus), "H" (headers), "F" (forms), "B" (buttons), and "G" (graphics) to jump to specific items.
Disability profiles accepted on our website
Epilepsy Safe Mode: This profile allows people with epilepsy to use the website safely by eliminating the risk of seizures resulting from flashing or flickering animations and risky color combinations.
Visually Impaired Mode: This mode adjusts the website for the comfort of visually impaired users such as impaired vision, tunnel vision, cataracts, glaucoma, and others.
Cognitive Impairment Mode – This mode provides different support options to help users with cognitive impairments such as dyslexia, autism, AVC, and others to focus on the essential elements of the website more easily.
ADHD Friendly Mode – This mode helps users with ADHD and neurodevelopmental disorders to read, navigate, and focus on the main elements of the website more easily, while significantly reducing distractions.
Blind Mode – This mode configures the website to be compatible with screen readers such as JAWS, NVDA, VoiceOver, and TalkBack. A screen reader is software for blind users that is installed on a computer and smartphone, and websites must be compatible with it.
Keyboard Navigation Profile (Motor Disability): This profile allows people with motor disabilities to operate the website using the Tab, Shift+Tab, and Enter keys on the keyboard. Users can also use shortcuts such as "M" (menus), "H" (headers), "F" (forms), "B" (buttons), and "G" (graphics) to jump to specific items.
Additional UI, layout, and readability tweaks
Font Settings: Users can increase and decrease its size, change its family (type), adjust spacing, alignment, line height, and more.
Color Settings: Users can select various color contrast profiles, such as light, dark, inverted, and monochrome. Additionally, users can swap title, text, and background color combinations, with more than 7 different color options.
Animations: Epileptic users can stop all running animations with the click of a button. Interface-driven animations include videos, GIFs, and flashing CSS transitions.
Content Highlighting – Users can choose to emphasize important elements like links and titles. They can also choose to highlight only focused or suspended items.
Audio Mute: Users with hearing aids may experience headaches or other issues due to autoplay of audio. This option allows users to mute the entire website instantly.
Cognitive disorders: We use a search engine that is linked to Wikipedia and Wiktionary, allowing people with cognitive disorders to decipher meanings of phrases, initials, slang, and others.
Additional features: We provide users with the option to change the color and size of the cursor, use a print mode, enable a virtual keyboard, and many other features.
Browser and assistive technology support
Our goal is to support the widest possible range of browsers and assistive technologies, so our users can choose the tools that work best for them, with as few limitations as possible. Therefore, we have worked very hard to be able to support all the major systems that comprise more than 95 % of the user market share, including Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Apple Safari, Opera and Microsoft Edge, JAWS and NVDA (readers). screen), for both Windows and MAC users.
