Suena la alarma, son las 4:00 a.m. Jairo despierta y prepara el primer café del día mientras Yosmith, su esposa, levanta al primogénito para que pueda asistir puntual a la Universidad en donde se prepara para ser un profesor de idiomas. Entre tanto, los nietos, lentamente por el dejo del sueño que aún está latente, se visten y toman alimentos para ir al colegio.
Un bulto con más de doscientas mazorcas espera a Jairo en el patio de la casa. Son como un tesoro para el sostenimiento económico de la familia. Deben ser cepilladas y pulverizadas para hacer los famosos bollos de mazorca, de angelito y maíz con queso, que se distribuyen día a día en diversos sectores de la ciudad de Santa Marta, en el Magdalena, bajo el nombre de su emprendimiento: “El Yonki”.
Hoy reina la tranquilidad y se siente la prosperidad, pero hace 12 años la situación era muy diferente. Con machetilla en mano, en medio del pele que pele de las mazorcas, Jairo Tovar no demuestra rabia o rencor cuando recuerda cómo en ese tiempo Jairo Antonio Martínez Rosales, alias ‘Jeringa’, líder de las Autodefensas Unidas de Colombia (AUC) en el sur del Bolívar, decidió ponerle un cartel imaginario en el pecho y declararlo objetivo militar, cuando vivían en San Martín de Loba (Bolívar).
“Estuve trabajando en Venezuela y de ese viaje alcancé ahorrar 5 millones de pesos y traje un minicomponente, monté un negocito pequeño en el pueblo que me vio crecer y donde me conocí con mi actual pareja, y nos pusimos a vender pasteles, bollos, cervezas. Luego hice un préstamo e invertimos en el negocio; hasta mercancía distribuíamos”, recuerda Jairo con nostalgia y resignación.
La prosperidad, sin embargo, no duraría mucho. Martínez Rosales, quien delinquía bajo el mando de Salvatore Mancuso Gómez, cabecilla del Bloque Córdoba de las AUC en el año 2005, daba la orden a sus subalternos de pedir en la tienda de Jairo y Yosmith todo lo que necesitaran para el sustento del grupo armado ilegal. Así, acabaron con la tranquilidad y la armonía de la familia, que vivía de la tienda de rancho, víveres y licores.
“Comenzaron por una bolsita de sal, otro día regresaron por otras cositas, pero una noche tocaron a la puerta y me exigieron en nombre de su comandante una canasta de cerveza, hielo, un cd de corridos prohibidos y un abanico, y aunque les mencioné que solo tenía 2 abanicos el de mi hijo y el mío, me dijeron que el mío debía ser entregado”, cuenta Jairo.
Los pedidos de las AUC en la tienda de Jairo y Yosmith aumentaron con rapidez. “Me obligaron a llevarlos a una loma y al siguiente día subí por mi canasta de cerveza, y desde ese momento comenzaron a ir día por medio y hasta con lista en mano de productos que ellos necesitaban, a la quinta les negué los objetos porque hasta el momento no me habían pagado y los amenacé con una pistola de juguete”. Desde ese instante Jairo fue declarado objetivo militar.
Ya no eran suficientes para el sostenimiento de la familia los bollos ni las galletas, amasadas y horneadas por Yosmith, de maíz con leche, anís, harina, y aceite. Cumplir con los encargos del día en la improvisada fábrica que armaron en el patio de la casa ubicada en la urbanización Ciudad Equidad, no alcanzó entonces para vivir igual que antes.
Negar los pedidos al grupo de Autodefensas fue una sentencia de muerte para Jairo; le tocó desplazarse a un corregimiento cercano. Pero ahí tampoco estaría tranquilo. Poco tiempo después dos hombres armados se acercaron y le preguntaron a un vecino por él. “Mi vecino se acercó muy agitado y nervioso, me comentó que unos tipos en moto me estaban buscado y estaban armados, dijeron que yo estaba en la lista de muerte. Tomé a mi esposa e hijos y hasta el sol de hoy no he vuelto jamás a San Martín de Loba”.
Jairo y su familia llegaron a Santa Marta, donde él declaró ante el Ministerio Público, el 14 de octubre del 2005, haber sido desplazado del sur de Bolívar. En ese momento comenzó su ruta de reparación integral y la prosperidad se empezó a acercar otra vez a su vida.
Eran buenas noticias, pero llegaron a la vez otras que podrían haber sido desalentadoras. En medio del proceso de reparación fue diagnosticado como paciente con enfermedad renal crónica.
La enfermedad, no obstante, no ha sido un impedimento para salir adelante. “En medio de mi enfermedad, me capacité, recibí ayuda de varias instituciones del Estado e hice talleres de fortalecimiento de negocio y con Capital Semilla tuve apoyo económico y material para continuar con el mismo proyecto ya emprendido en San Martín de Loba”, cuenta Jairo.
Capital Semilla es una convocatoria en la cual participan emprendedores, entre ellos sobrevivientes del conflicto armado, y cuenta con el apoyo de Innpulsa Colombia, la Cámara de Comercio de Santa Marta y la red de Emprendimiento del Magdalena.
“Con ese impulso logramos crear la marca ‘Productos típicos el Yonki’ y vendemos alrededor de 300 bollos diarios, más de 150 galletas, también tenemos kequi, cuca, cortado, almojábanas, entre otros productos; además, me indemnizaron administrativamente a mí y a mi hijo y la familia recibió más de 10 millones de pesos”, relata con emoción.
En sus palabras no expresa ningún rencor. “A los victimarios solo les pido que le pidan perdón a Dios y a las víctimas, que no les guardo rencor, que se arrepientan y que aunque me causaron daño, no les guardo ningún resentimiento. Algún día sueño con volver a mi tierra, estoy aquí porque debo enfrentar la enfermedad, pero si pudiera retornar a mi pueblo sería el hombre más feliz”, concluye este hombre cuya resiliencia le ha permitido seguir prosperando al lado de su familia.
Jairo y Yosmith sueñan con convertir su negocio en una microempresa. Ya están registrados en la Cámara de Comercio y poco a poco han podido superar las barbaries del conflicto armado. “Nuestra vida continúa, ni el conflicto armado logró detener el sueño de salir adelante”, enfatiza él con su acostumbrado optimismo.

Screen reader and keyboard navigation
Our website implements the ARIA (Accessible Rich Internet Applications) attribute technique, along with several different behavior changes, to ensure that blind users who visit with screen readers can read, understand, and enjoy the features of the website. As soon as a user with a screen reader enters your site, they are immediately prompted to enter the screen reader profile so they can effectively navigate and operate your site. Here's how our website covers some of the most important screen reader requirements, along with console screenshots of code examples:
Screen Reader Optimization: We run a background process that learns website components from top to bottom, to ensure continued compliance even when the website is updated. In this process, we provide screen readers with meaningful data using the ARIA attribute set. For example, we provide accurate form tags; actionable icon descriptions (social media icons, search icons, cart icons, etc.); validation guide for form inputs; roles of elements such as buttons, menus, modal dialogs (popups), and others. In addition, the background process scans all images on the website and provides an accurate and meaningful description based on Image Object Recognition as an ALT (alternative text) tag for images that are not described. It will also extract texts that are embedded within the image, using an OCR (Optical Character Recognition) technology. To activate screen reader settings at any time, users just need to press the Alt+1 keyboard combination. Screen reader users also receive automated prompts to activate screen reader mode as soon as they enter the website.
These settings are compatible with all popular screen readers, including JAWS and NVDA.
Keyboard navigation optimization: The background process also adjusts the HTML of the website and adds various behaviors using JavaScript code to make the website work with the keyboard. This includes the ability to navigate the website using the Tab and Shift+Tab keys, operate dropdown menus with the arrow keys, close them with Esc, activate buttons and links using the Enter key, navigate between radio items and checkboxes using the arrow keys and complete them with the space bar or the Enter key. In addition, keyboard users will find quick navigation and content skip menus, available at any time by clicking Alt+1, or as the first site elements while navigating with the keyboard. The background process also handles triggered popups by moving keyboard focus to them as soon as they appear, and not allowing focus to drift away from it.
Users can also use shortcuts such as "M" (menus), "H" (headers), "F" (forms), "B" (buttons), and "G" (graphics) to jump to specific items.
Disability profiles accepted on our website
Epilepsy Safe Mode: This profile allows people with epilepsy to use the website safely by eliminating the risk of seizures resulting from flashing or flickering animations and risky color combinations.
Visually Impaired Mode: This mode adjusts the website for the comfort of visually impaired users such as impaired vision, tunnel vision, cataracts, glaucoma, and others.
Cognitive Impairment Mode – This mode provides different support options to help users with cognitive impairments such as dyslexia, autism, AVC, and others to focus on the essential elements of the website more easily.
ADHD Friendly Mode – This mode helps users with ADHD and neurodevelopmental disorders to read, navigate, and focus on the main elements of the website more easily, while significantly reducing distractions.
Blind Mode – This mode configures the website to be compatible with screen readers such as JAWS, NVDA, VoiceOver, and TalkBack. A screen reader is software for blind users that is installed on a computer and smartphone, and websites must be compatible with it.
Keyboard Navigation Profile (Motor Disability): This profile allows people with motor disabilities to operate the website using the Tab, Shift+Tab, and Enter keys on the keyboard. Users can also use shortcuts such as "M" (menus), "H" (headers), "F" (forms), "B" (buttons), and "G" (graphics) to jump to specific items.
Additional UI, layout, and readability tweaks
Font Settings: Users can increase and decrease its size, change its family (type), adjust spacing, alignment, line height, and more.
Color Settings: Users can select various color contrast profiles, such as light, dark, inverted, and monochrome. Additionally, users can swap title, text, and background color combinations, with more than 7 different color options.
Animations: Epileptic users can stop all running animations with the click of a button. Interface-driven animations include videos, GIFs, and flashing CSS transitions.
Content Highlighting – Users can choose to emphasize important elements like links and titles. They can also choose to highlight only focused or suspended items.
Audio Mute: Users with hearing aids may experience headaches or other issues due to autoplay of audio. This option allows users to mute the entire website instantly.
Cognitive disorders: We use a search engine that is linked to Wikipedia and Wiktionary, allowing people with cognitive disorders to decipher meanings of phrases, initials, slang, and others.
Additional features: We provide users with the option to change the color and size of the cursor, use a print mode, enable a virtual keyboard, and many other features.

Our goal is to support the widest possible range of browsers and assistive technologies, so our users can choose the tools that work best for them, with as few limitations as possible. Therefore, we have worked very hard to be able to support all the major systems that comprise more than 95 % of the user market share, including Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Apple Safari, Opera and Microsoft Edge, JAWS and NVDA (readers). screen), for both Windows and MAC users.
