The massacre occurred in the township, Alto San Juan and the village La Rula is commerated In San Pedro de Urabá

The commemoration will take place within the framework of the Day of Memory and Solidarity with the victims of armed conflict, and on the 18th anniversary of the occurrence of this act attributed to the demobilized FARC guerrilla.

This April 25 in the village of El Rayo, central point between Alto San Juan, and Rula, in San Pedro de Urabá, from 10 am, will commemorate the Day of Memory and Solidarity with the victims, through a tribute to the 12 victims who left the massacre perpetrated 18 years ago in an old school in this township.

In the village of El Rayo, south of San Pedro de Urabá, a commemorative event will be held in honor to the victims of these events on April 25, 2001. It is estimated that about 250 survivors of neighboring localities will attend the commemoration.

The commemorative activity includes a walk that will be concentrated in the Rayo sidewalk, site chosen by the community as a strategic place that will link the two communities, Alto San Juan and La Rula, to whom the armed conflict caused various damages and systematic violations to the human rights, among them, the murder of a communal leader of La Rula, Santander Velasquez and two of its workers, besides, displacement, torture, kidnapping among others.

Exactly, as a result of wave of violence that was lived, the constant combats and disputes of this strategic corridor between the armed groups to the margin of law, who inhabited the old township Alto de San Juan, moved towards the urban helmet of San Pedro de Urabá bordering zones, being this uninhabited, until the point of losing its category like township, and becoming sidewalk.

However, as narrates Delcy Garcia, who came with a process at the table of victims of the municipality, began to work together to recover from the aftermath of violence, and involve leaders, “in 2013 we decided to meet and invite other leaders to tell their story, because before these trails were desolate, people were afraid, they left houses, animals, everything; until 2004, 2005, which some began to return on their own. However, in 2015 we already signed voluntary acts with the Victims Unit, as a returned population, which helped us to receive 25 homes and 300 people benefited with Families on their Earth” she added.

These actions, and the commemoration will be an opportunity to meet as a path and continue advancing in the reconstruction of this, “Today we feel the accompaniment that the entity is giving us, the possibility of raising our voices and be heard”, added Delcy.

Within the programmed activities, messages are planned on banners, allusions to life, and reconciliation. In addition, a video with testimonies of  victims will be screened, trying to preserve the memory and emphasizing the integrity and determination that has allowed them to move forward after these events occurred.
